Friends and family through the years
No matter what my age
Though they thought they knew me well
They kept me in a cage

Every time I sought the sky
Someone would cut me down.
So they took my wings from me
And tied me to the ground.

I know that they have seen me die.
I know that they had heard me cry.
Yet they still refused to see
Into the Truest Part of Me.

I followed a stranger's path
To see where it might lead.
I found a familiar place
Of friendship, song, and mead.

Every one that saw my face
They also knew my heart
They asked "Where are your wings
You seem broken a-part"

I know they had not seen me die.
I know they have not heard me cry.
Yet somehow they manage to see
Into the Truest Part of Me.

So I sought my tainted wings
They'd been hiding the whole time.
Healing in the dark alone
Waiting for me to find.

How we laughed as the wind took hold
And tingled up my spine.
Finally among my own
I believed I'd be fine.

I felt like I would never die.
I thought that I might never cry.
That I finally could set free
Oh the Truest Part of Me.

When I finally got back home
They said "You shouldn't have those things."
I couldn't fit back in my cage
So they tried to break my wings.

But by now I'd seen the sky
So they broke my heart instead.
A betrayed and broken soul
That lay dying on his bed.

It's like they wanted me to die.
They took joy and made me cry.
They brought out all their cruelty
To break the Truest Part of Me.

I made my way to the Stranger's Path
Found you gathered there for me.
With the moon shining above
Reflected on the sea.

"Welcome Brother to your new home
Be welcomed in our lands."
Then you stepped forth from the crowd
And took me by the hand.

All I had to do was die.
Every one had heard my cry.
Now they finally all can see,
Oh, the Truest Part of Me.

All together we will fly.
Glorious in the summer sky.
On wings of joy for all to see,
Oh the Truest Part of Me.

alternate ending
All I had to do was die.
It was you who heard my cry.
Someone finally can see,
Into, the Truest Part of Me.

Hand in hand, you and I
Glorious in the summer sky.
On wings of joy, for you set free,
Oh, the Truest Part of Me.
